Alas

In my continuing series "Ways in Which Mexico Is Not The Paradise I Would Like To Imagine It To Be", I feel compelled to point out that last week while the Carribean World Series was taking place -- in Mexico, in fact! -- I did not see a single bar or restaurant carrying the games or advertising them. On the other hand, many bars, restaurants, and even stands at the mercado have been showing and advertising soccer games, including that dramatic Mexico-v-Netherlands showdown that ended in a 1-1 tie in overtime, proving once again that soccer may be the dullest game on the planet. And yet the people here eat it up.

In America, I have to put up with people pretending that soccer is interesting once every four years. I suspect it would be more if we lived here. Viva Beisbol!
